I really liked this place when I visited last time. The old city wall offers a great view of Xuanwu Lake from above—the height is just right, and the view isn’t too obscured by haze… at least you can still see the lake…. You can walk here directly from the hotel, which is just over a kilometer away, or take a bus. Admission is 15 yuan, and it takes about half an hour to explore. There’s a milk tea shop right at the entrance, and to the north of the city wall is Mingchenghui, which has several dining options with nice atmospheres~~
The area now referred to as “Taicheng” is located within Nanjing, at the northern foot of Beiji Pavilion and south of Xuanwu Lake. It is a section of the Ming Dynasty city wall extending westward from Jiefang Gate. When Zhu Yuanzhang built the city of Yingtian Prefecture, he originally planned to extend this section of the wall westward to Gulou Hill and connect it with Shitou City. However, after the “newly built Houhu City” project in the 19th year of Hongwu, this section was abandoned. This wall section uses strip stones as its foundation, topped with bricks fired in the early Ming Dynasty. It measures 253.15 meters in length and 20.16 meters in height, with a width of 9.8 meters at the western end and 10.3 meters at the eastern end.
