On the occasion of the university’s 119th anniversary, the school unexpectedly launched a physical version of the alumni card. This finally resolves the pain points of alumni accessing the campus and making purchases in the canteens, granting them the same privileges as current students and faculty, which is extremely convenient.
The application process is as follows:
- First, apply via the “Tongxue Tongji” mini-program by navigating to “My,” then “Alumni Benefits,” and selecting “Physical Alumni Card.”
- Before applying, you need to complete two steps: first, activate your campus benefits account (once activated, it can be used for all services requiring unified campus login); second, upload a photo and pass manual review.
- Afterward, you can apply for the physical alumni card, which also requires manual review. Once approved, you will receive an SMS notification to pick up your card.
You can then collect the physical card at the 2nd floor of the Tongji University Alumni Home (Main Campus) or the Comprehensive Service Hall on the north side of the 1st floor of Fu Building, Jiading Campus. The collection process is very fast, taking about 2 minutes per person; however, if there are many people, you will need to scan a QR code to join a queue. Even though I went on a Monday morning, I still had to wait in line for over 20 minutes.
Please note that currently only personal collection is supported, so remember to bring your ID card.
While waiting, you can visit the Alumni Home downstairs to browse merchandise or grab a coffee. If you prefer not to carry items yourself, you can also order via the WeChat mini-program or Taobao, though a 10 RMB shipping fee applies.
Note that the campus access function takes 6 hours to synchronize after collection, but the top-up and spending functions are available immediately.
To top up, search for “Campus Card” in Alipay, enter the Alipay Campus Card section, and add your card number. You can easily top up and check your balance there.

Additionally, you can add a Shanghai Transportation Card with integrated alumni card functions, allowing you to leave home without the physical card.
Here is how to add it: Open the Shanghai Transportation Card app, go to “My,” select “University-Enterprise Co-branded Card,” choose “Tongji University,” and log in via the Unified Authentication Platform. Afterward, you can activate a Shanghai Transportation Card with alumni card functions. Note that you must collect the physical alumni card before adding this, as campus functions are activated only upon physical card collection. Without the physical card, the virtual card will have no campus functions and will serve solely as a transportation card.
Since only one card can be set as the express transit card, it is recommended to replace the existing Shanghai Transportation Card in your mobile wallet. Refund the original card within the app—the balance will be returned to the app—and use that balance to top up the new card.
The new card supports the China T-Union standard and can be used nationwide. When entering/exiting the campus or paying in canteens, the operation is identical to using a transit card: simply tap your phone without unlocking it.
Usage remains the same as before: top up the transit card via the Transportation Card app/wallet, and top up the alumni card via the Alipay mini-program.
Also, please note that the various alumni card functions appear to be valid for one year, after which you must click “Renew Card” in the mini-program to continue using them. The campus benefits account is valid for six months from the last login date, so simply logging into any university website within a six-month period will keep it active.
