Yixing Shanjuan Cave

Shanjuan Cave is located on Luoyan Mountain in Zhuling Village, approximately 25 kilometers southwest of Yixing City. It is a typical karst cave with a geological history dating back about 350 million years to the Carboniferous Period. The cave features rich landscapes, including stalactites, stalagmites, stone curtains, and underground rivers, maintaining a constant temperature year-round—warm in winter and cool in summer. Shanjuan Cave covers an area of approximately 5,000 square meters with a total length of over 800 meters. It consists of four sections: the “Upper Cave,” “Middle Cave,” “Lower Cave,” and “Water Cave,” and offers boat tours inside.

The mountainous region in southwestern Yixing exhibits prominent karst topography with numerous caves concentrated in the area. Shanjuan Cave, along with Zhanggong Cave and Linggu Cave, are collectively known as the “Three Wonders of Yixing.” Among them, Shanjuan Cave ranks first.

The name “Shanjuan Cave” originates from the legend of the ancient sage “Shanjuan.” According to classical texts such as Liezi and Lüshi Chunqiu:

  • Shanjuan was a hermit who lived in the mountains and forests, revering nature and distancing himself from worldly affairs.
  • Legend has it that during the reign of Emperor Shun, Shanjuan was invited three times to serve as an official, but he politely declined each time, choosing instead to live in seclusion in this cave under the principle of “yielding the world to virtue.”
  • Shanjuan symbolizes the philosophy of governing through non-action (wu wei) and noble reclusion, and is regarded as one of the representative figures of hermit culture.

Since the Tang and Song dynasties, Shanjuan Cave has been a renowned tourist destination. Many literati and scholars, such as Su Dongpo, Shen Kuo, and Yuan Mei, have left behind poems and inscriptions on steles. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, numerous scholars inscribed poems and carvings on the cave walls, endowing the cave with both natural beauty and cultural charm.

Starting in the 1920s, Chu Nanqiang, a prominent gentleman of Yixing, led skilled craftsmen in developing Shanjuan Cave and Zhanggong Cave over a period of 13 years. On November 11, 1934, the opening ceremony for tourism at both caves was held, along with the inauguration of the highway connecting them, pioneering modern cave tourism in China. In 1986, Shanjuan Cave was designated a Key Scenic Area of Jiangsu Province and was later rated as a national-level scenic spot.

The scenic area has a large parking lot and a spacious visitor center where you can rest and enjoy the air conditioning. From there, it is about a 500-meter walk to the cave entrance.

The temperature inside the cave is relatively low, so it doesn’t feel hot, and the ventilation is good, preventing any stuffiness. The interior relies mainly on various lighting effects and projections. Compared to Silver Cave (Yinziyan) which I visited previously, the ventilation and lighting here are on the next level. However, the overall scale is not as grand as Silver Cave, and purely in terms of natural wonders, it falls short. Nevertheless, this place also features a waterfall, boat rides, and a cable car to go up the mountain, making for a very comprehensive experience overall.

Various inscriptions can be seen on the rocks.

As we walked along, a waterfall unexpectedly appeared; it is open-air, which is quite interesting.

The boat ride isn’t very long and requires a bit of queuing, but since there are many boats, it actually moves quickly. The scenery during the boat ride is rather ordinary, but the main appeal lies in the experience itself.

The cable car is also very traditional, evoking a nostalgic feeling reminiscent of riding cable cars in childhood.

At the summit stands the Yuantong Pavilion, offering panoramic views from above, as well as the Guoshan Stele erected during the Three Kingdoms period.

After getting off the cable car, there is still a 2 km distance to the exit parking lot, but you can take an electric shuttle bus directly there for 5 yuan.

Overall, it is recommended to purchase a combo ticket online in advance.
