A week ago, a devastating fire claimed many lives. Today, on the seventh day of mourning, I took a taxi to the scene of the tragedy. There was a sea of people; the line stretched from Jiaozhou Road and Yuyao Road, along Yanping Road, all the way to Changping Road. In this queue stretching over 500 meters, everyone remained quiet, moving forward in an orderly fashion. This is the first time since the World Expo that I’ve seen such a large gathering of people, entirely spontaneous and unorganized.
Flower vendors by the roadside

Most passersby held a bouquet of chrysanthemums in their hands.

Many police officers and volunteers were present to maintain order.

Finally, I saw it.

People walked up, laid flowers, bowed, and departed.

Flowers piled high as mountains.

Soon, they formed a vast sea of blossoms.

“May the living be strong and the departed rest in peace. May you have a peaceful journey to heaven.”

“Shanghai does not weep.”

“Shanghai don’t cry.”
