Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is the southernmost snow mountain in China. It stretches 35 kilometers from north to south and 13 kilometers from east to west, comprising thirteen peaks, with the main peak, Shanzidou, reaching an altitude of 5,596 meters. Due to the significant elevation difference, the mountain features a complete vertical natural landscape ranging from subtropical and temperate zones at the river valley base to the frigid zone at the summit.
It is advisable to purchase cable car tickets online in advance. Tickets are sold for specific time slots, so be sure to check your schedule and arrive at the designated time. You can take a taxi from your hotel to the mountain entrance; the venue for the “Impression Lijiang” show is also located here, very close by, and the ride should only cost the minimum fare. There is also a dining area nearby, making the tourist facilities quite comprehensive.
Take the free shuttle bus to the cable car boarding point at an altitude of 3,356 meters. This cable car is very modern and one of the highest in China, taking visitors up to 4,506 meters. At first, you see trees below, but soon the scenery turns to snow… Each cabin holds eight people, and everyone starts using oxygen as soon as they board. It’s hard to tell if they really have altitude sickness… In reality, the incidence of altitude sickness isn’t actually that high.
Upon reaching 4,506 meters, the air becomes noticeably thinner, but the air quality is excellent, and it is rare to see such a blue sky. Surprisingly, there is even a nice café and a Zhengxin Chicken Cutlet shop here. The rest of the journey must be completed on foot. The walkways are wide, not steep, and very well-constructed, with plenty of resting spots along the way and vending machines where you can buy oxygen.
I have to admit that walking just a few steps in this thin air leaves you breathless, let alone climbing a mountain. However, I didn’t experience any altitude sickness and didn’t need to use oxygen throughout the entire trip. Looking up, you see the snow-capped peaks; looking down, the green mountains. The view is truly spectacular.
We finally climbed to 4,680 meters, the highest point accessible to tourists. The total elevation gain is 174 meters over a distance of about 500 meters. The sunshine is beautiful, so be sure to apply sunscreen. Mobile phone signal is excellent throughout the scenic area, making it easy to post updates on social media.

Coming down from the top is much easier, and seeing those still climbing up gives you a completely different perspective… We even saw people taking wedding photos up here—they are truly dedicated! After taking the cable car back down, you can head to Blue Moon Valley, which will be covered in the next article.
In summary, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is a must-visit destination when traveling in Yunnan. For those of us who rarely get the chance to see snow mountains in our daily lives, this was a long-awaited experience. With its well-equipped facilities and magnificent scenery, the scenic area did not disappoint at all and is definitely worth a visit.
