Blue Moon Valley is located at the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Its water comes from the melting snow and ice of the mountain. It gets its name from the lake’s azure blue color and the crescent-moon shape of the valley. The riverbed is composed of white limestone, so the water turns white when it rains, but remains blue on sunny days. This scenic area is also quite large and does not charge an additional admission fee; as long as you have entered the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Scenic Area, you can visit here for free. It can be considered a must-see attraction, especially for those who suffer severely from altitude sickness. At an elevation of only 2,800 meters, you’ll immediately see no one needing oxygen tanks here. If you can’t climb the mountain, coming here to experience the snow-capped peaks up close still makes your trip to Lijiang worthwhile.
As the river flows through Blue Moon Valley, it is blocked by the terrain, forming four relatively large bodies of water: Jade Liquid Lake, Mirror Pool Lake, Blue Moon Lake, and Listening Wave Lake. Paid electric carts are available to take visitors from the bus station to each of these lakes, but we recommend simply walking—the distance isn’t far at all. It has to be said that this place is truly a photographer’s paradise; the photos taken here are absolutely stunning.
