The Westin Chongqing Liberation Square

The Westin Liberation Square is Westin’s flagship hotel in Asia. Although it opened in 2014, its facilities remain impressive, and the location is excellent—right next to the cable car station and not far from the metro. However, this area attracts many tourists, resulting in frequent traffic jams, which can make arriving by taxi somewhat inconvenient. Walking to Liberation Square and Hongya Cave is easy, and the surrounding neighborhood offers an abundance of dining, entertainment, and leisure options.

The lobby is located on the 51st floor, above all guest rooms, and feels remarkably spacious. Of course, like every other Westin, it hasn’t forgotten to showcase mattresses for sale. The only downside is that transferring elevators in the lobby can be a bit cumbersome. Meanwhile, the hotel entrance is on the 3rd floor—a distinctive quirk of Chongqing…

Although the famous Instagram-famous rooftop pool isn’t open, there’s still a steady stream of visitors taking photos. The owner must have invested significantly just to create such a photogenic attraction.

When we arrived at the hotel, our room wasn’t ready yet, so we waited for a while in the lounge. Surprisingly, the lounge was quite busy too. The afternoon tea was pretty good, and all beverages were self-service. There isn’t much else to see in the lounge itself, except for an Instagram-worthy staircase spanning three floors, alongside a towering wine cabinet where many guests stop to take pictures.

We were assigned a junior suite—I couldn’t help but marvel at the owner’s wealth, B&An OLED TV paired with a Herman Miller chair; Hermès scarves displayed in framed wall art; and in the bathroom, Toto Washlets plus dual vanities—not to mention double showers…

I remember staying at the old InterContinental during my last visit to Chongqing. That property has since been rebranded as Crowne Plaza, while the new InterContinental at Raffles City has opened, becoming another trendy landmark for social media check-ins. As a result, this hotel isn’t quite as popular anymore. Nevertheless, both its facilities and service remain solid, and its location is highly convenient. Unless you’re planning to spend your entire trip holed up in your hotel, it’s still an excellent choice when visiting Chongqing.
