The Shanghai Planetarium is a branch of the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum. The Shanghai Science and Technology Museum served as the main construction entity, the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences provided technical support, and Ennead Architects was responsible for the design. Trial operations were held on July 5 and 10, 2021; it officially opened on July 17 and opened to the public the following day. Upon completion, it was the world’s largest planetarium by floor area. The museum features three main exhibition zones—Homeland, Cosmos, and Odyssey—as well as special exhibition areas including Quest for the Sky, Curious Planet, and Heading to Mars, along with an 8K Ultra-HD Dome Theater, Star News Lounge, Wangshu Observatory, Xihe Solar Tower, and a Stargazing Camp.
With the vision of “Shaping a Complete View of the Universe,” the Shanghai Planetarium strives to inspire curiosity, encouraging visitors to experience the starry sky, understand the universe, and contemplate the future. The main building forms “celestial orbits” through its elegant spiral shape. Three distinctive circular elements—the round skylight, the inverted dome, and the dome theater—create a “Three-Body” structure that collectively interprets the fundamental laws of celestial motion. The outdoor landscaping outlines the spiral arms of a galaxy, seamlessly connecting with the adjacent “Starry Sky Realm” park, fully embodying the organic integration of architecture and ecology.
When it first opened, it was packed with crowds, and you couldn’t even snag tickets on weekends… Now that it has been open for five years, tickets are no longer as hard to get (though they still sell out quickly during winter and summer school breaks). Tickets for the 8K Dome Theater remain extremely popular, so remember to book in advance. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions and experiential activities on an irregular basis; detailed descriptions and schedules are available on their official WeChat account.
Additionally, some experiential activities can only be reserved via the WeChat account after you have entered the museum and your ticket has been validated. For these, we recommend checking your phone immediately upon entry to see what slots are still available. Capacity for each session is very limited, and on busy days, chances are you won’t be able to book anything at all…
The museum makes extensive use of various screens and projections, making the overall environment quite dim. Photography is nearly impossible (especially photos of people), but the visual effects are excellent. We suggest simply enjoying the show and revisiting those physics concepts you may have long forgotten.
The “Homeland” zone begins with the starry sky we haven’t seen in a while. Using one of the world’s most advanced optical planetarium projectors, it invites you to pause and gaze up at the brilliant stars. You then step into space, marveling at giant models of Earth, the Moon, and the Sun, strolling through the solar system, admiring precious meteorites, and finally confronting the majesty of the Milky Way to understand our place in the cosmos;
The “Cosmos” zone presents the wonders of the universe from five dimensions—spacetime, light, gravity, elements, and life. Numerous interactive exhibits invite you to explore the laws governing celestial evolution and motion;
The “Odyssey” zone creates a brilliant river of scientific milestones, showcasing humanity’s great journey of cosmic exploration and inspiring visions for the future of astronomy and space exploration, prompting profound reflection and insight among visitors.
There are virtually no stairs inside the museum; pathways consist almost entirely of ramps.
Regarding transportation, the planetarium is about 800 meters from Dishui Lake Metro Station. Driving is recommended, but finding parking on weekends can be extremely difficult. We suggest using street-side parking lots or the Sponge Park parking lot nearby. There is a restaurant and a café inside the venue, but dining options outside offer greater variety and better quality.
Finally, although it is called a planetarium, it is essentially a large-scale physics museum. It explains how modern physics helps humanity understand the universe, progressing step by step from Newtonian mechanics to relativity, optics and the Doppler effect, atomic physics, black holes and gravitational waves, and finally cosmology. For young children, the content may be too advanced to grasp, while many adults may have forgotten these concepts, leaving everyone unsure who can explain what to whom.
