Ewha Womans University is one of the oldest universities in Seoul, South Korea. Founded in 1886, it was the first women’s university in the country. Originally named Ewha Haktang, it was renamed Ewha Womans University in 1948 and is now the largest female educational institution in the world. Ewha Womans University is also considered the most prestigious women’s university in South Korea… and has naturally produced many notable alumni.
As for transportation, there are two subway stations nearby: Ewha Womans University Station on Line 2 and Sinchon Station on the Gyeongui-Jungang Line. Actually, Sinchon Station is a bit closer; getting off at Ewha Womans University Station requires a bit of a walk. However, since I was coming from Samseong Station, taking the train directly to Ewha Womans University Station meant no transfers, so that’s the route I took. After exiting the station, I walked for a while, passing some coffee shops and restaurants along the way. Then, after crossing a street, I caught sight of the campus—and was truly amazed. It had snowed late the previous night, and the early winter snow still blanketed the leaves, creating an exceptionally beautiful scene. Since this snow usually melts by noon, it was a rare sight indeed.
Many visitors come here to see the elegant European-style architecture and the spectacular sunken classroom area. It really is impressive, and plenty of people were there taking photos.
While wandering around the campus, I couldn’t help but wonder: with a university entirely full of women, just how intense must the palace intrigue get…? Hahahaha.
