Xi’an City Wall

After exiting the Bell Tower Metro Station early in the morning, I headed straight to the Muslim Quarter to buy a Roujiamo. The only stall with a long queue served one that was indeed much tastier than what I had at the Great Tang All Day Mall. Perhaps because it was still early, the Muslim Quarter wasn’t very crowded and felt quite peaceful.

I didn’t expect the Xi’an City Wall to be a AAAAA-rated scenic area. It has several gates, so if you buy tickets online in advance, it’s best to check which gate you plan to enter from to avoid unnecessary hassle. This time, we entered through the North Entrance of the South Gate and exited through the South Entrance of the South Gate, walking just a short section on the wall. If you’re interested, you can also rent a bicycle and ride a full loop around the top of the wall.

nThe Xi’an City Wall was built in the early Ming Dynasty upon the foundation of the Imperial City of the Tang Dynasty’s Chang’an. After numerous repairs over the centuries, it formed a rigorous defense system. It is one of the most complete ancient city walls still existing in China. Alongside the Pingyao City Wall in Shanxi, the Jingzhou City Wall in Hubei, and the Xingcheng City Wall in Liaoning, it is recognized as one of the four best-preserved ancient city walls in the country. With a perimeter of 13.74 kilometers, the wall is surrounded by a moat,

The landscaping along the moat is also well done, making it a great spot for a stroll.

Opposite is Xi’an SKP, arguably the most high-end shopping mall in Xi’an, though it doesn’t seem to have much foot traffic.

On the other side of the city wall, there are many traditional buildings housing cafes, bars, and guesthouses.

Many people were taking photos under this large lantern.

Finally, we exited through the South Entrance of the South Gate. Many people enter from here, so walking the route in reverse was actually quite interesting.

It seems various events are held on the city wall at different times of the year, such as lantern festivals and food festivals. Without any special events, however, visiting it as a standalone attraction can be a bit dull. Once you decide to walk in one direction, you really have to go a long way to find an exit; turning back isn’t feasible after going too far, which makes it somewhat inconvenient.
